Hidden Local Getaways in Greenville

June 27, 2018

It’s no secret that Greenville, South Carolina, is a great place to live. We have friendly people, beautiful weather, and always something happening. When people contact Cothran Homes to relocate, they’ve done their homework about the region, but they’re also looking to find out where the locals go. So, we thought we’d give you some insight to the favorite places and hidden local getaways in Greenville. Eat like the locals. BIscuits are part of Southern culture, so you have to start your day at Biscuit Head for huge, flaky, homemade biscuits (also known as “cat head biscuits”)—with your choice of gravies  and the jam bar, or filled with brisket, fried green tomatoes, or something else that turns a biscuit into a meal. Biscuit Head uses locally sourced ingredients, too. If you’re searching for a caffeine boost,  Coffee Underground and The Village Grind are very popular coffee shop/cafes worth trying for a coffee concoction with a side of confectionary. For lunch, how could you not want to try a place called “Swamp Rabbit Cafe”? This cafe, bakery, and grocery store serves wood-fired pizzas and great sandwiches on their own artisanal bread and supports local farmers. No matter what whets your appetite, you won’t have to go far in Greenville to satisfy it. If you’re in the mood for great barbecue, head to Smoky Dreams BBQ. Feeling like something specific? Willy Taco, Greektown Grille, Yellow Ginger, Takosushi, and Passerelle are just a few local favorites. A natural choice for outdoor lifeFalls Park on the Reedy is a 32-acre oasis in the heart of downtown Greenville’s Historic West End. You can take a leisurely walk (with or without your dog) through the Greenville Arboretum along the Reedy River, through the many gardens, and across the Liberty Bridge, a 355-foot pedestrian bridge that provides a stunning view of the waterfalls. Pedrick’s Garden is a somewhat secluded area of Falls Park, a perfect place to enjoy solitude among the flowers. The park’s Old Mill Garden and River Lodge are favored by local couples for a wedding venue. And an amphitheater is the place to go for a theatrical performance, outdoor movie, or the outdoor concert series. Falls Park is both a getaway and a glimpse of Greenville’s past and present. On a hot day, cool off at the splash fountain at River Place, or for some serious wet and wild fun, the 7th Inning Splash Waterpark. Any time of year, check out one of the outdoor festivals or other events happening in Greenville. Follow the clues on a trail of bronze mice with the Mice on Main scavenger hunt. Downtown Greenville has been undergoing a renaissance over the past 40 years. It has flourished as a vibrant city that has a deep heritage and strong pride.
